The purpose of the School Nurse: The school nurse is a registered professional nurse.  He/She is a self-regulated health care professional who works autonomously and in collaboration with others to strengthen and facilitate the educational process by improving and protecting the physical health status of students. The registered school nurse is uniquely qualified in preventive health, health assessment, care delivery and referral procedures.
 
Qualifications:
  • Minimum: Registered Nurse with a Bachelor of Science in Nursing(BSN) from an accredited University is  required , a Masters Degree in Nursing (MSN )is preferred. A valid Saudi Council for Health Specialist license as a Nurse specialist and valid unencumbered license from country of origin (UK,USA,etc.)is required. 
  • Pediatric and/or emergency nursing or school nurse experience preferred
  • Ability to obtain Basic Life Support and Advanced First Aid and to teach life-saving skills (American Red Cross or American Heart Association) or the willingness to attain qualification within 4 months of the start date required.
  • Demonstrated commitment to health education.

Performance Responsibilities:
  • Provides direct physical health-care to students, including assessing and rendering of first aid and emergency care;
  • Provides leadership for the provision of health services as a health-care expert;
  • Records accurately the date, time, and services rendered for each student for whom health services are provided;
  • Serves as a liaison between school personnel, family, community, and health care providers regarding physical health concerns of children;
  • Provides health Education, First Aid CPR Training to staff
  • Monitors and aids in the management of medication administration  (including insulin) in emergency and non-emergency scenarios;
  • Leads and participates in the raising awareness on dental hygiene yearly to students;
  • Promotes health and safety through education about healthy practices;
  • Develops and conducts staff training programs (including but not limited to CPR, Heimlich maneuver, asthma, and first aid);
  • Develops, maintains, and monitors a Rapid Response Team;
  • Promotes a healthy school environment;
  • Identifies and addresses actual and potential health and safety problems;
  • Acts as a role model in the promotion of healthy lifestyles;
  • Orders and maintains an office space to provide health care and first aid;
  • Inventories and orders necessary supplies to provide appropriate health care and first aid;
  • Reports to the supervisor concerns about student/employee issues/ailments when appropriate
  • Upholding confidentiality when working with student and employee health information
  • Informs divisional principal(s) and Superintendent when medical emergencies arise;
  • Abides by agreed upon “Guidelines for Nurse’s Office” found in ES/MS/HS handbooks;
  • Perform other duties as assigned by the divisional principals.
  • Maintains a Health Office eBinder to include all daily/monthly responsibilities, letters, educational curriculum, powerpoints/slideshows, etc. 
  • Additional duties assigned following AIS-R school calendar: Event Coverage by Nurses

Diabetic student management 
  • Licensed registered nurse (Saudi Council preferred)

Terms of Employment:
Salary will be assigned from the Faculty or Classified Salary Schedule; the contract term will be 190 – 200 days.
 
Evaluation:             
Performance will be evaluated in accordance with school policy by the designated supervisor.

The School Nurse is a registered professional nurse.  He/she is a self-regulated, health care professional who works autonomously and in collaboration with others.  The School Nurse strengthens and facilitates the educational process by improving and protecting the physical health status of students.  He/she is uniquely qualified in preventive health, health assessment, and referral procedures.
 
The School Nurse should possess the following qualities:

Scope of Practice
The scope of practice is the range of roles, functions, responsibilities, and activities, which a registered nurse is educated for, competent in, and licensed to practice.  The scope of practice defines accountability and limits of practice.
 
The role and responsibilities of the School Nurse are broad and complex, and as such the expectation is that the School Nurse has the knowledge, skills and attributes to safely provide evidence-based nursing care needed by the school students, within the following framework:

  • Ethical and Legal practice
  • Personal and Quality Development
 
The School Nurse:
  • Promotes health by providing health education, assists on health curriculum development teams, and may provide programs to students, families, community, and society to promote a healthy and safe environment;
  • Provides safe, direct, preventative, and curative healthcare to students and staff, and communicates effectively with clients, family, community and society;
  • Provides leadership in the professional practice setting and the profession;
  • Accepts accountability for his/her own actions and decision-making;
  • Delivers care and practices nursing within an ethical framework and a socio-cultural context;
  • Functions within the limits of licensure and school policy guidelines including Rules of Health Office Access [K12]; AIS-R Protocol for Addressing Suspected Self-Harm in Students
  • Maintains professional standards to provide the highest quality of healthcare to the school community; they have the professional obligation and responsibility to develop self, others, and the profession;
  • Assumes responsibility for one’s own professional development through lifelong learning to ensure continuing competence to practice.
